ProEngage originally published this web design trends article back in 2017. We have updated it to the 2020 version. Therefore, let us look back at the predictions and trends and see where they stand today.

Web designers are always coming up with increasingly interesting ways to create innovative websites using the advancing technology available. That was true then, and it is still true now.

There are still a few key web design trends that can help your local business attract customers. Here is our line-up of then and now web design trends:

Two hands holding a 2017 web design trends ball

Web Design Trends Mobile-First

Prior to 2017, website design catered to desktop websites. With mobile compatibility as an afterthought and how a website rendered on a desktop computer ruled the day.

However, with more people than ever surfing the web on the go, mobile started to take over.

Today, it is so prominent that Google has moved to mobile-first indexing. And when Google makes a move this big, webmasters follow.

Virtual reality

In 2017, with VR gaining massive popularity after the release of several gaming headsets. We predicted that it would seep into the internet space at some point. And the technology is still evolving but has yet to play a role of significance in the world of local marketing.

Personalized Content

Personalized content had been in the works for a while. This year will be no different. We expect to see designers working towards personalized websites that adapt based on the visitor.

Bold Type

In 2017 fonts used on websites were becoming just as bold as the content they were communicating. Choosing the right font is just as important as it was then. However, website load time (especially on mobile) has taken the lead. And fonts that load fast are now the preference.

Authentic Photography

For years, stock images have been the staple of many a web page. However, times started changing in 2017, with users spotting a stock photo from a mile away, thus leaving designers reluctant to use them at all. If anything, this has picked up steam. Image search is on the rise, and using original images is a must.

Videos, GIFS, and Comic Strips

Plain text increasingly began to compete with more visual communication tools. Videos, eye-catching GIFs, and comic strips were on the rise. Today, video marketing is dominating. In fact, more webmasters are integrating videos into web pages.

Minimalist Design

With the focus of design back on content, designers moved towards ‘flat’ website designs. Websites that put content on center stage in an attractive yet efficient way. Again, no significant change there!

Web Design Trends Conclusions

The number one area of focus continues to be user experience; therefore, if you are a local company looking to hire a Houston web design company. As we said back in 2017, make sure you go with a local company that will pick out the elements that highlight your work and leave out what does not.
